About the Director
The Center’s Director is Robert M. Feibel, MD, Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. He has been an active member of the Ophthalmology Department since starting his residency in 1970. He has been a three-time winner of the Ophthalmology Teacher of the Year, Clinical Staff award, the last occasion being 2015.
Dr. Feibel has published extensively in the field of the history of ophthalmology, concentrating on the history of trachoma, glaucoma surgery, and famous St. Louis ophthalmologists. He has been on the editorial board of two journals, and reviewer for several other journals.
He received his Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in classics, from The Johns Hopkins University in 1965 and his medical degree magna cum laude from Harvard Medical School in 1969.
Recently, Dr. Feibel has received two honors to be awarded in the coming year. He was selected as the Snyder Lecturer for the next annual meeting of the Cogan Ophthalmic History Society Meeting which will be held in March, 2018. He was also chosen as the Distinguished Alumnus Award Recipient of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences of the School of Medicine, the award to be presented at the annual Spring Update Meeting in April of 2018.
